on a mission to protect survivor stories

the challenge

To only share their story once, child survivors have their interviews recorded. They trust we will protect their haunting truths. Unfortunately, common practices are outdated, no longer meeting security and privacy standards. Together, we can do better.

the protect survivor stories pledge

I/We pledge to honor the humanity of survivors, the dignity of their personal stories, and their right to safety, justice, and healing.

I/We promise to secure the truths of child survivors of abuse by supporting practices that ensure forensic interview evidence is handled in a manner that prioritizes the child’s present and future well-being and minimizes the risk of loss or misuse.

Children are the foundation and future of a community. A community steeped in trauma cannot fully function, floundering in pain, suspicion, depression, anger, guilt, fear, and self-medication, in repeating cycles of harm, not just to self but like a cancer to all in contact. What we do for our children greatly benefits everyone and everything. I don’t want what happens to children to become dark clouds hanging over their thoughts, effecting their world view for all eternity, killing the very joy of the soul. I want better for our children. I want justice, healing, hope.

why does this pledge matter to you?

Children who have been abused have been betrayed – most often by someone that they know, love, and trust. They are often also betrayed by their own bodies, by the reactions of family, friends, neighbors, and professionals and even sometimes by the very systems in place to protect them and seek justice for crimes against them. Protecting their very private story of what may be the very worst thing that has ever happened to them is the least we can do to avoid them experiencing another layer of betrayal. We owe it to the children we serve to be responsible with these sensitive disclosures that they so bravely found the courage to tell. I believe that protecting these stories is protecting the very children we serve and honoring the promise we make to offer hope, healing and justice.

I believe in the rights of these children coming from trauma to a future they can trust. One that makes good on the promises made for safety, justice, and healing. One that supports their humanity and gives them agency to their own stories in spite of their youth and throughout their lifetime. One that reinforces caring people surround them and have their best interests at heart in every step of their journey to wellbeing. One that inspires hope.

When a child attends a Forensic Interview, they are allowing you to be apart of one of the most traumatic moments in their lives. Protecting that interview thus protects that child from further victimization, shame or embarrassment. VidaNyx allows CAC’s, Law Enforcement, DCFS and our State’s Attorney’s Offices to keep that child safe from the moment they enter the center.
